BUSTEC Substitutions
For BUSTEC 100.1, 100.2, 100.3 (3 units) OR BUSTEC 300.1, 300.2, 300.3 (3 units total) you can substitute:
- BUSTEC 110 (3 units, only offered in the Fall) or
- CISA 305 and CISA 306 (total 4 units) or
- CISA 315 and CISA 316 (total 4 units) or
- CISA 305 and CISA 315 (total 4 units)
If someone wants to substitute for only two units (like BUSTEC 100.1 or 100.2) then you can do a substitution of CISA 305, CISA 315, CISA 306 or CISA 316 (each 2 units)

English Pathways
Per Josh Roberts, SCC English Professor:
We have year-to-year agreements with seven of our feeder schools:
- Kennedy
- McClatchy
- River City
- Rosemont
- Burbank
- Sac High
- Johnson
I’ve attached a copy of the letter that was sent to the principals and English faculty at each of these schools. Burbank chose not to participate in the norming and grading session this year, so their graduating seniors are not eligible (they knew this would be the effect of their decision but made it anyway). The first group of graduates for whom this applies arrived on our campus last fall (the agreement was only with Kennedy, Sac High, and Johnson; however, the other schools had not begun fully participating until this school year).
Successful completion of the 12th-grade ERWC class along with scoring at least “Standard Conditionally Met” on the 11th grade CAASPP/EAP exam makes them eligible for ENGWR 300; however, we are still asking the students to take the assessment test. This is so they can complete the matric process and get priority enrollment and also we can keep track of how effectively the curricular collaboration is actually preparing them for ENGWR 300. Of course, this is only marginally useful as a baseline so long as we are using Accuplacer, but we will also have a great deal of granular information once we begin using CCCAssess this fall, so we will always ask that the students still take the English assessment test.

English as a Second Language
Students who have completed one of the two sequences, ESLW/G/R 320 and ESL 325, can go to the ESL Department and request a bridge to ENGWR 300. They should authorize the milestone and allow the student to enroll.

Math 299 Part II/Math 135
From Joseph Steever, Department Chair, Mathematics and Statistics
- Math 135 satisfies as a prerequisite as Stat 300, Math 300, Math 310, and Math 124. It may also serve as a prerequisite to Stat 480, but I would need to confirm that with Debbie Van Sickle. It does not serve as prerequisite for Math 334, 335, 340, or 342. All of these courses require much heavier algebra background than those presented in the Math 134/135 curriculum.
- I misspoke when I included Math 310 in the list of classes that would accept Math 135. I was thinking it had been the course approved by the Department, but upon communication with other faculty and with a review of the minutes from last year, that course was actually Math 300. However, I have talked about it with several colleagues, including those that have taught 135/299B and those that have most recently taught 310 and we are comfortable extending the prerequisite list of 310 to include 135. This should be taken care of in curriculum early next semester. In the meantime, challenge forms will be approved.
- Math 134/135 is the pathway for students whose educational goals do NOT require calculus. It is not the intended pathway for any program that requires any of the calculus courses (Math 340/342, Math 350/351/352, or Math 400). Quite simply, in order to make the course as accessible as possible for Stat 300 students, a significant portion of the higher algebra skills were removed from this sequence. The previously mentioned calculus sequences require very different levels of algebra mastery than Stat 300 does and this sequence does not meet those requirements.

Can Sociology 300 (SOC 300) be substituted for Sociology 321 (SOC 321)?
A student may use a SOC 300 course to apply to the RN program if they can prove they have met the Ethnic/Multicultural Studies Requirement. A substitution General Education Equivalency Form must be submitted at the time of application proving the applicant has met the General Education (GE) Ethnic/Multicultural Studies Graduation Requirement through another course. The equivalency form, completed by a counselor, must be submitted with the application. If you have completed a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, no further verification is needed. If you have an Associate’s degree from the Los Rios Community College District, no further verification is needed.
Biology 430 (old 25) and 431 (old 26), Anatomy and Physiology – At SCC, Anatomy and Physiology is taught as a combined two course series. Most colleges offer the courses separately. Students who complete either Anatomy OR Physiology (one course only) before enrolling at SCC, should try to complete the other course at a college who offers it separately (i.e., Sierra or San Joaquin Delta). Otherwise, the student will be required to complete SCC’s BIOL 430 and 431.
Per Mary Turner, not all combined Anatomy and Physiology courses offered by other colleges are equivalent to SCC’s courses. The courses must have a chemistry prerequisite of CHEM 305 (CAN CHEM 6) or CHEM 400 (CAN CHEM 2).
Quarter Units (per Dale Cohen, Oct 2007):
Science courses (BIOL 430, 431, and 440)
Students who do not have enough science quarter units would be encouraged to take BIOL 431 at SCC or another “physiology” course at another college of their choice to bring up the deficiency in units.
Non-science courses (pre-nursing program requirements)
The Nursing Department will round up 4 quarter units (that converts to 2.66 semester units) to 3 semester units to meet the requirements. If the quarter units convert to less than 2.66 semester units, the student will be required to take another course (one of the non-science courses with quarter units) to make up the difference.
SCC Course Equivalency Policy (Effective Fall 06)
For any ADN/RN prerequisite courses completed outside Los Rios colleges:
- Read the course description or syllabus.
- If it is very clear that the course is equivalent and the unit value is the same,
you can list the course as completed on the Nursing Pre-Major Evaluation Sheet or the ADN/RN Pre-Nursing Educational Plan.
If you are unsure that the course is the same, ask the student to get a course waiver from the content area (e.g. Biology for Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology). The original should be sent to the Admissions & Records Office by the department. Please have the student request a copy for their files (they should make additional copies). The student will need to include a copy with his/her application for the nursing program.
In regards to using ASSIST, please be reminded, courses listed are what the four-year college will accept, not necessarily that their courses are equivalent to ours (especially quarter unit schools).
For example:
At UC Davis, NE PH B 10 – Elementary Human Physiology (4 units) is articulated with SCC’s BIOL 430 and BIOL 431 – Anatomy and Physiology (5 units each for a total of 10 units). The California Board of Nursing requires that students completed at least 8 units of Anatomy and Physiology in order to take the licensing exam, so the UC Davis class alone is not considered equivalent.
